Creating Smoke Using Particles in After Effects

For this exercise we were asked to create smoke using particle effects in After Effects. I used CC Particle Systems 2 in order to create this effect. In order to create smoke, it is important that you don’t do anything crazy with the particle settings. I set the birthrate to 0.2 and the longevity to 2.0. I left everything in the producer the same. Those settings are not really important when creating smoke unless you want to change where the smoke originates. Under “physics”  I changed the animation styler to direction. This is, in my opinion, the best setting for creating smoke. I set the velocity to 0.3 and everything else stays at it.s default. Under “particle,” I used lens flare are my particle type. For birth size and death size you just need to make sure that birth is smaller than death (I used 0.15 and 1.65). I set size variation to 100%. Fade out is selected for the opacity map and its max opacity is 20%. Then you just select your colors.

Messing Around With Particles in After Effects

For this we were told to create something cool and unique using particle effects in class. I ended up making this sort of sea of crumpled up plastic. I plan on using something similar to this in my finished “Explanations” post. I used CC Particle Systems 2 in order to create this effect. I use a high birthrate, velocity, and longevity to help fill up the screen. I also made the birth size of my object fairly large too. I used a TriPolygon to get the shape and a spiral setting in order to get the motion.
